Justice Sheilah Martin will retire from the Supreme Court of Canada on May 30, 2026—one day before her 70th birthday.
In a recent CBA National Magazine article, Chief Justice Wagner praised Martin’s “remarkable contributions to Canadian jurisprudence,” noting that she was the first judge he swore in as Chief Justice and that he has long appreciated her enthusiasm for initiatives that promote openness, transparency, and meaningful engagement with Canadians.
The article also quotes Marie-France Major, partner at Supreme Advocacy, who observed that while Justice Martin’s professional background was rooted in criminal and constitutional law, she demonstrated notable breadth across many areas, including family law, immigration, contract law, and torts. Major added that Martin “will leave a significant legacy as a careful and principled jurist.” Read the full article here.
