I was in grad school (McGill). But what I was really doing was listening to the LP Born to Run by Bruce (Springsteen).
Knew most songs by heart—for the title song, every single word—happens if you listen to it 10 times a day for a year. Had to go buy a record player downtown just to play that one record. Actually two, later on, Passagers by Beau Dommage (came out in 1977), knew all the words to that one too.
Best line (have not yet found the right S.C.C. appeal factum to drop it in to):
Highways jammed with broken heroes on a last chance power drive.
And here is my best air-guitar-impression from the album.
One night I was in my dorm room (I was a “Floor Fellow”), listening to The Boss on my headphones, at max, not realizing I forgot to hit the button to disconnect the (very large) speakers. Was of course unable to hear the folks banging on the door. Such a bad example.
Anyways, here’s a real good podcast by NPR on the making of the album, an interview with Peter Ames Carlin, who wrote the book Tonight in Jungleland.
Second best song after Born to Run? Thunder Road. Just sayin’.
And, my staff colleague just told me (I did not know) about a new movie—a biopic, “Deliver Me From Nowhere” (about Bruce’s journey crafting his 1982 album, Nebraska)—in theatres tomorrow. Trailer here. That staffer is going Friday—am outa town then, so she will give me an update/sing a coupla songs?
Finally, you got a best album/CD/Song? Email me.
Next up. Leonard (Cohen, not Nimoy) by Angela Marinos, Chief General Counsel, Raoul Wallenberg Centre for Human Rights in Montreal.
